How do I connect an ADSL filter?
An ADSL filter is always connected in between the socket and the telephone device in your premises. For example If you have a home telephone connected on your premises you will connect the wall socket into the ADSL filter and from the ADSL filter into your home telephone. An example of this is displayed below:
The ADSL filter must not be connected between the wall socket and your ADSL modem. If you do connect an ADSL filter to this cable it will filter out the ADSL signal and you will not be able to use your Internet service.
The filters should be connected to all telephone services in your home/business premises which share the same telephone number. This includes:
• Telephones
• Fax machines
• EFTPOS machines
• Dial-up modems
Other telephone services on your premises will not require filters.
Connecting an ADSL modem using an Ethernet connection
To connect your ADSL modem you must ensure you have the following:
• One ADSL modem with Ethernet/LAN connection
• One ADSL modem power supply
• One blue Ethernet cable
• One telephone line cable
• One computer with built in Ethernet/LAN connection
The following steps should be followed for connecting the hardware:
• Unpack the modem, power supply and cables from the box
• Plug in the power cable to the ADSL modem and the wall socket
• Plug in the Ethernet cable from your computer Ethernet Port to the ADSL modem Ethernet Port
• Plus the telephone line connection from the modem into the telephone wall socket which contains the ADSL service.
• If your Ethernet socket has a green light located next to the port it should now be lit up acknowledging the connection
• The Ethernet network light on the modem should also be lit up.
• The WAN light on your ADSL modem should be permanently lit detecting the ADSL signal
Connecting an ADSL modem using an USB connection
To connect your ADSL modem you must ensure you have the following:
• One ADSL modem with USB connection
• One ADSL modem power supply
• One USB cable
• One telephone line cable
• One computer with built in USB connection
The following steps should be followed for connecting the hardware:
• Unpack the modem, power supply and cables from the box
• Plug in the power cable to the ADSL modem and the wall socket
• Plug in the USB cable from your computer USB Port to the ADSL modem USB Port
• Plus the telephone line connection from the modem into the telephone wall socket which contains the ADSL service.
• The WAN light on your ADSL modem should be permanently lit detecting the ADSL signal
For configuration of the modem you will need to follow the directions set out in your ADSL modem instruction manual. teleMates provides a settings sheet by which contains all details required to complete this set up.
How do I configure my modem?
Each modem set up is different as there are many brands & models on the market. You should refer to your ADSL instruction manual for further guidance.
What are my ADSL configuration settings?
The configuration setting for your ADSL service is supplied on a teleMates configuration sheet upon completion of the installation of the service. If you have not received this please contact your account manager on 131501 for further assistance.
Security
a) Viruses
What is an Internet Virus?
A virus is a nasty piece of programming usually disguised as something else that can break through your computer's defenses often causing some damage and automatically spreading to other computer users. There are many versions of viruses. Some will wreak their effect upon execution, some will lie dormant waiting for another software to execute them. Some will look for passwords or credit card details, some overwrite your programs and hard drive, some will be just annoying and reboot your computer once a month.
How do I get a Virus?
One of the most common ways for virus spreading today is via email. If your friends computer is infected, you might receive an email from them with an attachment, with a subject line like "This is so funny" or similar to that. Unaware, you might open that attachment and infect your own machine. Other ways to get viruses are through downloads of files from different sites, such as screensavers, games, utilities. You can get them from malicious web sites through DirectX or Java applications. Not all downloads or sites are nasty ones.
How can I protect my computer from Viruses?
The best way to protect you computer is to install an antivirus program. The program will sit on your computer and scan all files and activity for virus threats. If a virus is detected, a good antivirus program will take the appropriate action to isolate and delete the file from your system. When you install an antivirus program, you must ensure you update the antivirus definitions with the latest viruses protection.
You should also be careful of emails and files received from other people. Often they contain attachments which may be virus infected. You also should avoid opening if you receive an email from someone you don't know.
How can my computer be infected with a Virus?
Viruses can enter your computer a number of different ways. The most common way is via an attachment to an email which is activated by the computer operator opening the file. Viruses can also be found in web pages, file downloads and CD-ROMs. You can also receive a virus if you are on a shared computer network where another computer has become effected in your office.
I believe my computer has a virus, what should I do?
If you believe your computer has a virus you should complete the following:
• Ensure you have a current antivirus program installed
• Download the latest virus definition updates
• Complete a full scan of your computer hard disk
If you believe a virus is still present on the machine you should have it checked by your computer technician.
b) Trojans
What is a Trojan?
A Trojan is like a virus except it acts differently. A Trojan masquerades as a benign application on your computer providing a secret back door entry into your computer. From here the Trojan could provide outside parties access to your computer and give access to your confidential information including passwords. They are also used to as another entry point for viruses to gain access to your computer system.
How do I protect my computer from Trojans?
You can protect your computer from Trojans by installing an antivirus program. You can also protect your computer from Trojans by installing a Firewall. Firewalls are frequently used to prevent unauthorized Internet users from accessing computers connected to the Internet.
Where does Internet Dumping come from?
Internet dumping is commonly found on illegal adult websites and recreational websites similar to this nature. They often require the end user to agree to the terms and conditions before the program installs itself into the computer. Other forms of dumping take control of the computer without the end user's knowledge.
How can I protect my computer from Internet Dumping?
You can protect your computer Internet by completing the following:
• Disconnect dial up modem: with your computer when it is not in use. If you are using ADSL services you should not need to connect a dial-up modem as well.
• Access Barring: teleMates has the ability to block access to premium and International services on your telephone line. This way your computer will not have the ability to access these service numbers.
• Agreements: Do not authorise any agreements on the computer without carefully reading the terms and conditions.
• Antivirus: ensure you have the latest antivirus program on your machine.
• Email: do not open any file attachments from unknown senders.

d) Windows Security Updates
As Microsoft windows is one of the mostly used operating systems used in the computer industry today, security exploits can often be found by hackers. These security vulnerabilities may give an outside party such as a hacker backdoor access to your computer or easy access for viruses.
As Windows security issues are discovered, Microsoft release free updates to their operating systems to provide better protection. These updates can be found at the following website . You can also have these updated automatically on newer Windows operating systems by using the automatic windows update system.
